Fresno League Education Committee
The Education Committee serves to inform and engage our members and the public in the challenges facing public education and to encourage efforts in our local schools to improve their performance.
- We send observers to FUSD School Board meetings to monitor procedures, especially with regard to the requirement for open and public meetings in keeping with the Brown Act
- We sponsor Lunch `n Learn Programs for our membership and the community on topics of current and significant interest. This year these have included:
7-12-07 Carol Mills, the President of the FUSD Board of Trustees, speaking about progress and challenges in Fresno schools;
10-29-07 Pete Summers, Director of FUSD Prevention and Intervention, and Dave Calhoun-- Director of Research, Evaluation and Assessment-- speaking about attendance and drop out issues in our local schools.
- We helped initiate universal preschool planning efforts in Fresno County through the Preschool Leadership Coalition with substantial grants from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Fresno County First Five Commission. We continue our engagement through the Voluntary Preschool Master Planning Team, which is working with a consultant to establish a written plan to implement preschool throughout Fresno County.
- We collaborate with other agencies as appropriate in the interest of public education.
